Drawing log is a log maintaining the history of drawings made, revision status, approval status, drawing schedule and information about transmittals. Drawing logs can be kept in a hand written format, spreadsheet or drawing log software. The drawing log provides a good summary to manage the drawing history. Today many drawing log software are available similar to Tracer Software[[<http://www.steeltracer.com>]. Practical reports can be generated with software to save time.

Most handrail is made of ASTM A53 Grade B 1-1/2 Sched.40 pipe. This pipe has an OD of 1.9” with a wall of .145”.
Sometimes Engineers or designers simply call out 2” pipe on their drawings. Most of the time they are specifying the 1-1/2 Sched.40,
but it always is a source of confusion and requires clarification.
For drawing purposes, Cad detailers may want to draw their handrail at 2”OD which is easy and works fine for most layouts.

These are the current standards for the nomenclature of various ways to cut away material from beams. It would be useful for all detailers to update their personal preferences to the latest standards so there is no confusion in the fabrication shop.

A steel detailer is a person who produces detailed drawings for steel fabricators and steel erectors. The detailer prepares detailed plans, drawings and other documents for the manufacture and erection of steel members (columns, beams, braces, trusses, stairs, handrails, joists, metal decking, etc.) used in the construction of buildings, bridges, industrial plants, and nonbuilding structures. A steel detailer's projects are usually commercial, industrial or municipal; residential projects are ra…
